Choosing the Right Sharpening Equipment

!±8± Choosing the Right Sharpening Equipment

Sharpening your tools, including knifes, sheers, saws and chainsaws is important. It keeps your tools working optimally and precisely. It used to be that stone grinders were the sharpeners of choice but there are many other options. The sharpener you choose depends on the tools you need to sharpen, your budget, and what you prefer. Here is an overview of different sharpeners so you can make an educated choice.

Grinding wheels are a common piece of sharpening equipment and come in a variety of shapes. There is a straight wheel which has a front facing edge and a cylinder wheel with the cutting edge at the front of the cylinder. They all have an abrasive material that will remove unwanted buildup and straighten the cutting edge so it will be sharp and precise when cutting. The grit (abrasive material) size is something to keep in mind when selecting a wheel. They range from rough (10-24 grit) to fine grain (100-180). The fine grain grit is good for tools that require precision and detail.

There are also bench grinders which are inexpensive and can easily be mounted on your workbench. The wheels are small - only 6 to 10 inches in diameter. It is run by an electric motor and has a tool rest to improve accuracy while sharpening.

There are different abrasive materials used depending on the brand and model. The most common material is aluminum oxide and is ideal for use on steel, iron and annealed (heat treated) iron. The next most common material used as abrasives on grinding wheels is zirconia alumina which is a combination of aluminum and zirconium oxide. This material is also ideal for sharpening a variety steels and alloys such as lawn mower blades.

One of the newest materials to hit the market is ceramic aluminum oxide and is extremely strong. It is preferred by craftsmen who like precision when sharpening their tools. Ceramic aluminum oxide is more expensive that other abrasive material due to its durability and accuracy.

Grinding wheels are useful for most of your tools that you need to sharpen but if you need to sharpen you chain saw then you will need a special tool. An automatic sharpener is the easiest and ensures uniformity. After you set the angle on the sharpener you place each tooth on it individually. A less expensive option is a manual chainsaw sharpener which will require more work. Since they usually come with more than one wheel they are more versatile than an automatic and therefore useful if you have multiple chainsaws.

Sharpening tools are an important part of any workshop or handyman workbench. Keeping your tools sharp with a professional sharpener will increase your precision, make cutting easier and you'll get more use from your tools.

Should You Try A Homemade Box And Pan Brake?

!±8± Should You Try A Homemade Box And Pan Brake?

Build or buy? That is a difficult question to answer for many of us who have tool-intensive hobbies. If you need a box and pan brake to be able to make some parts for a project you are working on, you may have had the thought that you could just build one yourself. Can't be that difficult, right? Maybe - maybe not. But there are other things to consider as well.

I knew a guy once - worked professionally as a luthier. One of the last things he had to do when finishing a violin, was to put in the tuning pegs - made of solid ebony. These need to have a conical shape to stay put in the peg-head, and this is achieved by means of what looks like a giant pencil sharpener. Now, this thing costs around 200 dollars, and when his father (also a luthier) heard that his son had paid that much money for something so simple, he set out to build one for himself. The thing is - he managed to build one in around two days, but he got nothing else done during that time. The big question was - how much was his time worth to him?

How much is your time worth to you? If sheet metal work is your hobby, or you have a hobby which requires you to do sheet metal work from time to time - do you really want to take part of your precious spare-time and devote it to tool-making? For some, the answer is no - given the chance to reflect on it. For others, tool-making can be as much fun as building anything. If you belong to that last group of people, then, by all means, build away!

Lots of people have built their own sheet metal brake because they needed a fast solution for bending sheet metal - but did not feel they could justify buying a sheet metal folder just to make a few bends. Some folks even go as far as building their own cnc-routers to use in their work, but then factory-made cnc-machines can be very expensive indeed, so at least it makes sense from a financial standpoint. But the thing is - a regular sheet metal brake is rather simple. It is, at its most basic, not much more than a vise with a few bells and whistles. A box and pan brake is a bit more complicated - but not much more expensive to buy, than a sheet metal brake - so while you could put the latter together in a few hours, the former might take significantly more work. Why? Because there are more parts, because the functionality is different and because it requires a bit more thinking and planning. In the end you have to decide whether this is something you would enjoy doing, or whether your time is better spent doing something else.

How to Use Knife Sharpening Techniques

!±8± How to Use Knife Sharpening Techniques

If you are buying your first knife or your next knife then you need to bear in mind the type of finish that you want when you are buying the knife. There are a number of different types of finishes which are suitable for creating a unique look for your own knife design. There are however some very important things to that you need to bear in mind when you are deciding the type of finish.

A jeweled metal knife finish is normally applied from the inside. This creates a very beautiful knife which can be seen from outside the knife. Another finish a file work finish imprints the handle with information such as the company's name in order to promote certain projects. The finish of the knife is only cosmetic it doesn't actually change how well the knife will work. This just changes the appearance of the knife.

Another option when considering finishing options is the stonewash finish. These knives are designed to look used from the moment they are new. They have abrasive designs on them which make them look older and like an antique. People like these types of knife because they look old from day one and so don't get damaged very easily. This finish will hide any dull patches of the blade. If you want a shiny polished look then you could consider using a scotchbrite finish, these are durable and will stand up to the test of time.

Yet another finishing option is vibed finishing. The purpose of this is to make your knife look a little worn but not as worn as stonewashed finish. Polished knife finishes will allow you to be proud of your knife when you show it off in public, however it will become damaged quite easily. It will be very difficult to keep a highly polished knife in its shiny condition because it will easily get marked. If you want your knife to be more of a show item than a functional knife then you should consider a polished knife. However if you want a functional knife then you should consider another option.

The finishing options do not change how well the knife works, however they just change the look of the knife.

There are many different types of finishes for your knife blade, by choosing the right one you could make your knife last for much longer. If you are using your knife on a regular basis then you might consider using a stone washed finish so that any scratches or blemishes don't show up on the surface of the knife. You will also want to consider getting a quality sharpener.

If you're not sure about the surface for your room then you should consider talking to your local knife retailer for some advice.

Take the next leap in saw chain technology. PowerSharp is an easy-to-use, precision sharpening system that gives chain saw users the power to sharpen their chain in a matter of seconds with a simple-to-use attachment. Fast. From dull to sharp in as little as 3 seconds. Easy. Only three steps to faster, easier cutting. Portable. Bar-mount sharpener is lightweight, durable, and highly visible. Precise. Exact alignment between cuter and honing surface for perfect angles and knife-sharp edges. Tough. PowerSharp chain is as durable and hardworking as other Oregon 3/8-inch pitch, low-profile chain. PowerSharp is a system that includes the PowerSharp Chain, the PowerSharp Guide Bar, and the Bar-Mount Sharpener working together; they provide a fast, simple, and portable method for sharpening saw chain with precision. Any cutting tool will dull with use, but the outdoor jobs that chain saws tackle are especially demanding. Contact with rocks, metal, or even dirt can quickly dull chain, making common tasks such as cutting firewood or trimming trees difficult and time-consuming. It is time to sharpen the saw chain when cutting is slower and more difficult or the wood chips become smaller, in extreme cases turning to saw dust. Before PowerSharp, chain saw users had three options: manually sharpen chain themselves, take the chain to a shop, or simply do nothing. Manual sharpening requires specialized tools and techniques and time. A trip to the shop means time off the job. Doing nothing leads to frustration with the tool or task. When the chain becomes dull, attach the bar-mount sharpener to the PowerSharp guide bar by sliding the steel pins through the guide holes, then closing and latching cover. Press the foot of the sharpener against a solid object, applying light pressure for 3-5 seconds. And you are back in the cut with a precision-sharpened chain.
